Dr. William “Bucky” Stubbs

Dr. Stubbs, from Caledon, enlisted in the Canadian Veterinary Corps in March 1917.

Veterinarians cared for the hundreds of horses that were used during World War I to haul weapons and supplies, and to carry wounded soldiers to field hospitals.

The PAMA Archives holds a collection of letters Dr. Stubbs wrote to his family back home in Caledon. In these letters, Dr. Stubbs describes his experiences during the war:

“Honestly I never had such a job in my life. I only get about 3 or 4 hours of sleep a day now … There are about 100 horses daily coming in.” -  April 29, 1917.

After the war, Dr. Stubbs married and returned to his home and continued his veterinary practice in Caledon.
